Why generic agencies fail family firms

Family law searches aren't like other legal searches

A personal injury claimant will shop around for a week. A parent who just found out their spouse filed for custody will call the first credible firm they see — usually within an hour, usually on a phone, usually outside business hours. That changes everything about how the marketing has to be built.

01

The searches are urgent and emotional

“Can my ex take my kids”, “emergency custody order Ontario”, “how to file for divorce”. These are 2am, panic-state queries. We build pages that answer the fear first and pitch the consult second — which is exactly what converts.

02

Trust is the entire conversion event

Nobody hands a stranger their custody case off a stock-photo website. Reviews, real bios, real outcomes, fast load times and a phone number that gets answered do more for your conversion rate than any keyword.

03

Local intent dominates the SERP

Nearly every high-value family law query returns a Map Pack above the organic results. If your Google Business Profile isn't optimised, you're invisible for the terms that matter most — no matter how good your blog is.

04

AI answers are already intercepting clients

People now ask ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews “who's a good divorce lawyer in Mississauga”. If your firm isn't structured to be cited by those systems, a competitor gets named instead of you.

05

Advertising rules are strict

Law society advertising rules limit what you can claim, how you can use testimonials, and how you can describe expertise. We build every page, ad and review request to stay inside those lines from day one.

06

Intake leaks more money than rankings

Most family firms we audit miss 30–50% of inbound calls. We fix the leak with missed-call text-back, after-hours routing and a booking flow — so the traffic we build actually turns into consultations.

Case studies

Two Canadian firms, two very different starting points

Both had the same problem a family firm has: good lawyers, invisible online, inconsistent inbound.

Personal injury · Mississauga, ON

From “we barely get any leads” to 200 qualified leads in 120 days

A Matheson Blvd W firm came to us in December 2025 with almost no organic footprint and no paid presence. We rebuilt the local profile, shipped service pages against high-intent city terms, and launched a tightly-targeted ads account alongside. Four months later the phone problem was the opposite one — the intake process had to be rebuilt to keep up.

200Qualified leads
86 organic · 75 ads · 39 GBP
622KGoogle impressions in four months
+77.3%Google Business Profile calls vs prior year
$66.80Cost per paid lead vs $200–400 market average

Why it matters for a family firm: the mix is the point. Ads produced leads in week one while the organic and Map Pack work compounded underneath — so there was never a dead quarter waiting for SEO to land.

Franchise & MSB law · Richmond Hill, ON

From 2–3 inquiries a month to $315,000+ in six months

A boutique firm with a decade of expertise and a 5.0 rating that almost nobody could find. We built topical depth around their niche, took the Map Pack, and got them cited by name inside ChatGPT for their core service query — a channel their competitors still don't know exists.

361Qualified leads
243 paid · 118 organic
$315K+Estimated revenue in six months
1.00Average Map rank on the core city term
467Keywords ranking, up from roughly 50

Why it matters for a family firm: “divorce lawyer [city]” behaves the same way this term did — a small number of very high-value queries, decided in the Map Pack, now increasingly decided by AI answers too.

Family law sub-niches

Built for every corner of a family law practice

“Family lawyer” is one keyword. The retainers live in the twenty specific searches underneath it — each with its own intent, urgency and page.

Divorce Lawyer SEO The highest-volume, highest-competition entry point. City pages, uncontested vs contested content, cost and timeline guides. divorce lawyer marketing · divorce attorney advertising Child Custody & Parenting Time The most urgent searches in the practice — emergency motions, relocation, access denial. High intent, high retainer value. child custody lawyer near me Child & Spousal Support Calculator-intent traffic captured with tools and guides, then converted into consultations on variation and enforcement. spousal support lawyer · support variation Separation Agreements Lower-cost entry service that fills the calendar and feeds larger matters later. Perfect for capturing early-stage searchers. separation agreement lawyer Property & Equalization Matrimonial home, pensions, business valuation. Lower volume, highest fee value per matter — worth owning outright. property division lawyer Mediation & Collaborative A different searcher entirely — cost-conscious, conflict-averse. Why family firms choose us

We only do one thing

Generic agencies run the same playbook for a plumber and a family litigator. We run one playbook, for one kind of firm, in one country — and we've run it enough times to know where it breaks.

One firm per city

We will never take your competitor down the street. Your rankings are yours — we're not building the same pages for the firm you're bidding against.

Law-society compliant by default

Every page, ad, review request and testimonial is built to respect the advertising rules in your province — LSO in Ontario, and the equivalent elsewhere.

Canadian team, no outsourcing

Toronto-based strategists who know the difference between a Superior Court of Justice matter and an Ontario Court of Justice one. Your content reads like a lawyer wrote it.

One connected system

Organic, local, AI, paid and intake all feed the same pipeline and the same dashboard. Nothing runs in a silo and nothing gets double-counted.

Retainers, not vanity traffic

We don't report on impressions you can't bill. We target the searches that produce consultations and we measure the consultations.

Built for Google and AI

Classic organic, the Map Pack, and the AI answer layer — because in two years the third one will be where half your clients start.

The 6-month system

What the first half year actually looks like

No mystery retainer. Here's the sequence, and what you should be able to see at the end of each month.

Month 1Foundation

Full audit, technical fixes, schema, Google Business Profile rebuild, citation cleanup, tracking and call attribution installed.

Month 2Launch

Ads live and producing the first leads. Core service pages published. Review generation running.

Month 3Visibility

Map Pack movement on primary city terms. Citations past 100. Impressions climbing across the whole keyword set.

Month 4Authority

AI engines begin citing your pages. Organic positions consolidate on the mid-tail. Content clusters interlink.

Month 5Organic leads

Two engines firing — organic consultations arrive alongside paid, and blended cost per lead drops.

Month 6Maturity

Multi-channel demand compounding. The question shifts from “are we getting leads” to “can intake handle them”.

SEO pricing

40+ hours of work a month. One flat fee.

Where other Canadian agencies bill $100–150 an hour, we charge a flat monthly rate because we run everything in-house. No setup fee, no lock-in contract.

Joydip Kirtunia, founder of GrowMinion and SEO for Family Law

Meet the founder

I'm Joydip Kirtunia. I do one thing — get Canadian law firms more cases.

I run SEO for Family Law and founded GrowMinion. For the past seven years I've worked hands-on with Toronto and GTA lawyers — not as an account manager passing work to a team overseas, but doing the keyword research, writing the briefs, building the profiles and reading the call recordings.

“In the last 12 months, that approach took an injury lawyer from near-invisible to 200 qualified leads in 120 days.”

Family law is where this system works hardest, because the searches are urgent and the Map Pack decides most of them. If your firm is good and nobody can find you, that's a solvable problem.

Questions

Family law SEO, answered

What is SEO for family law, exactly?

It's the work of making your firm the one that shows up when someone in your city searches for a divorce, custody, support or separation lawyer. In practice that means four connected things: organic SEO (service pages, city pages and guides that rank in the classic blue links), local SEO (your Google Business Profile ranking in the Map Pack that sits above those links), AI search optimisation (getting named by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews), and conversion (making sure the visitor actually calls or books).

We also run Google Ads, Meta Ads, web design, content strategy and intake automation for firms who want the whole system rather than just the organic side.

How long until I see results?

Google Ads: leads in the first week, once tracking and campaigns are live.
Map Pack: meaningful movement in 2–4 months, depending on how competitive your city is and how much of a review base you already have.
Organic: 4–6 months for the pages that matter, longer for the most competitive city-level terms.

The firm in our first case study reached 200 qualified leads in 120 days — but that was with ads running alongside SEO from month one, which is why we usually recommend the combination.

Do you work with more than one family law firm in my city?

No. One family law firm per city. If we're already working with a firm in your market we'll tell you on the first call rather than waste your time — and we'll tell you honestly whether the market is still winnable.

Is this compliant with law society advertising rules?

Yes. Every page, ad, review request and testimonial is built to comply with the advertising and marketing rules that apply to you — the Law Society of Ontario's rules on advertising, specialisation claims and testimonials in Ontario, and the equivalent provincial rules elsewhere in Canada. We don't use “best divorce lawyer” style superlatives, we don't imply specialist certification you don't hold, and we don't fabricate reviews.

What does it cost?

SEO is a flat $999/month CAD for a single location or $1,499/month CAD for multiple locations. There's no setup fee and no long-term contract.

Ads management starts at $350/month plus ad spend, websites from $1,000 one-time, and automation from $200. Those are quoted after the call, once we know what you actually need.

How much should a family law firm budget for ad spend?

In most Canadian markets, $1,500–$3,000 a month of Google Ads spend is enough to test a family law campaign properly and produce a reliable lead flow. In our legal accounts we've seen cost per lead land between roughly $30 and $70 — well under the $200–400 that's typical in competitive legal verticals. We'll give you a specific number for your city on the call, based on real auction data rather than a guess.

We already have a website. Do we need a new one?

Usually not. Most family firm sites can be fixed rather than replaced — technical cleanup, new service pages, schema, and a conversion pass on the existing design. We only recommend a rebuild when the platform itself is the bottleneck, and we'll say so plainly rather than upselling you into a project you don't need.
